Sheboygan Youth Football was founded in 1987 by Mr. Don Kollath (above). At the time, Don was the head football coach at Sheboygan North High School. He realized shortly after the Sheboygan Area School District had dropped Middle School tackle football as a cost savings measure that our kids would be at a competitive disadvantage if they didn’t develop basic tackle football skills prior to reaching high school. More importantly, Coach Kollath felt that our players lacking these fundamental skills could be placed in an unsafe situation competing against other high school teams who had either a Jr. High tackle football program or Youth Football program sending players to their schools.
Thus the Sheboygan Youth Football program was born. The objective of the program was to provide an opportunity for all 5th 6th, 7th and 8th grade students in the Sheboygan Area School District to learn the fundamental skills of tackle football and then practice and hone those skills under knowledgeable coaches in weekly practices and games. The program had approximately 64 players in its first year, and has now grown to over 200 players per year with the addition of providing 5th graders the opportunity to play tackle football beginning in 2010. In the past 35 years, Sheboygan Youth Football has given approximately 6600 kids the chance to play organized tackle football in the City of Sheboygan and surrounding communities.
